Bear Aware day at the Alaska Zoo

Are You “Bear Aware”?

Celebrate Mother’s Day by Learning about Bear Awareness at the Zoo

Help us kick-off bear awareness season at the “Bear Aware Event” on Sunday, May 8, 2011 from Noon to 4pm at the Alaska Zoo. FREE zoo admission for mothers on Mother’s Day!

Special Feature: Bear-resistant Alaska Waste trash can tests, 1:00pm at black bear exhibit, and 3:00pm at brown bear exhibit. See our bears in action with these tough cans! Members of the media can arrive early before the can tests to set up cameras. Our goal is to raise awareness of bear safety as we enter the summer season, including securing items that could potentially attract bears to properties or camp sites.

This event, hosted by the Alaska Zoo and the Anchorage Bear Committee, will feature activity stations highlighting bear awareness principles. Visitors will discover how far away a bear can smell something, how to use bear spray safely, how to keep a bear-aware home or camp site, how to safely secure trash and other bear attractants, and how to react safely if they encounter a bear. Other games and activities will include information booths on bear safely, bear storytelling, bear biology arts and crafts, and more. The winning entries from a children’s Bear Aware Art Contest will be on display.

The Alaska Zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
