Moose Proof Plants

moose-76195_640Spring is on it’s way, and it’s time to start planning your garden. If you’re new to Alaska you may not know about one of the greatest pests your garden will face– moose. Moose will hop over most fences and devour any plant that they think tastes good. In the winter this is mainly trees, but in the spring and summer they prefer less woody plants like your tulips. Greenhouses and garden stores sell natural moose repellant sprays, and they work well if you can stand the smell. I prefer to plant some of the following plants that moose avoid.

Yarrow
Daffodils
Lamium
Delphinium
Foxglove
Mint- Moose hate the smell. Highly invasive, so plant it in pots.
Allium
Amur Chokecherry
Monarda

Here are some plants you need to protect. Moose love these plants, so surround them with plants moose hate like mint.

kale
cabbage
tulips
hotsas
flowering kale
certain marigolds
mountain ash
OC Cross Cabbages
Livingston Daisies
Almost all edible vegetables or fruit
