Home Maintenance
Reminders, Tips & Hints

Tip of the week:

Recipe for a clean drain: If your drains are clogged and you don’t have any commercial drain cleaner handy, try the following: pour ½ cup baking soda down the drain, followed by ½ cup of distilled white vinegar or lemon juice.  The combination will bubble and fizz.  Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse the drain with hot water.

Monthly Interior Chores:
These maintenance chores should be performed monthly to keep your home in good working order.

  • Replace filters on forced air furnaces (this should be done monthly in the winter to reduce indoor air pollution, and every 2-3 months in the summer).
  • Test all GFCI outlets (ground fault circuit interrupter receptacles) by using test buttons.
  • Test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Make sure your windows open easily for emergency egress. Lubricate as needed.
  • Clean shower heads & sink faucets to keep water flow steady.
  • Pour water down unused drains.
  • Grind ice cubes in your garbage disposal to sharpen blades.
  • Drain a bucket of water from your hot water heater to help remove sediment.
  • Check stairs and handrails for safety. Repair any loose steps and secure handrails as needed.
  • Check bathtub and shower caulking, and replace as necessary.
  • Clean kitchen exhaust fan filters
